My blog has also become now official blog of my web hosting site eWebGuru, and my all web hosting related announcement goes here. So here is another new annoucement.

One of the basic question which many newbie webmaster face is which hosting to choose linux hosting or windows hosting. Some people have misconception that since they work in windows computer, they should go for windows hosting. Since all web hosting packages comes with user friendly control panel, one can manage all aspects of hosting through this control panel. Therefore it hardly matters which operating system you use in your computer and which you choose for your web site hosting.

I myself own around 20 websites and my all websites are on linux server.

Some of the advantages which I found of Linux hosting are:

1. Linux hosting is Cheaper than windows. Since linux is open source, it comes free and there is no license fee associated with it. Thats why linux hosting are generally cheaper than windows.
2. Linux server has some of the popular features which windows server does not support like mod rewriting, cron job, etc.
3. All popular blog and forum scripts runs on linux server if at any point of time you want to add forum or blog in your site you should use linux hosting.
4. There are far greater number of open source and free scripts available which run on linux environment.

Through my web hosting company ewebguru.com. I was offering only linux hosting as max people prefer this and also rates of linux hosting is far cheaper than windows hosting and maximum development works are going on in PHP, MySQL.

But recently I started getting many requests for windows hosting or ASP hosting. Initially I ignored them, thinking that windows hosting market is not too big and it will not be profitable to sell windows hosting if there are not many customers. But as the demands increased I decided that I should also start selling windows hosting.

So now I am offering windows hosting also. Although demand is not as much as that of linux hosting, but I hope I will be able to recover my cost if not make profit through it, in first year.

After I started web hosting business, I thought I should write some articles on webhosting also. Although I previously wrote two articles on my experience of free web hosting and shared webhosting.

In this article I am writing on how to choose a good web hosting company.

With hundreds or may be thousands of web hosting companies in the market it is very difficult if not impossible to know which web hosting companies truly provide an excellent hosting solution at good price. When you have an established domain name with a good web hosting company, you can get reports on your traffic and which of your pages your customers are visiting most often, as well as many other statistics.

Your web host will charge you a fee ranges from Rs. 200 to Rs. 2000 yearly. In India generally trends is pay yearly, whereas in American or European countries web hosting companies charge on monthly basis.

Always avoid free web hosting services, because you may experience bouts of server downtimes and you are likely to have significant limitations in storage, number of email addresses, FTP upload etc.

Make sure your host can accommodate e-commerce and storefronts, wireless capability, bogs, forums, chats, online interactive helps and anything else you want to add onto your web site.

Estimate what your growth needs are and ensure that this web host can serve you as you grow. The last thing you want to do is change host mid way unless you absolutely have to do so. I was thinking to start web hosting business since last one year, but was always busy in something or other. Actually other than my own sites, I was managing sites of some of my friends and relatives also, and was buying and renewing their web space and domains. Also many of my friends used to come to me for purchasing domain and web hosting.

Although I already have a VPS, but I was not selling the hosting from that because, I was not intersted in any interference in my VPS, and I was using it to host only my sites. Also my VPS contain directadmin as control panel, whereas many people specially newbie prefer cpanel hosting.

So I purchased a cpanel reseller plan for hosting, and also a domain reseller plan to sell domains at very competitive rate. One of the thing which I kept in mind that I did not purchase reseller plan which allow overselling, because overselling server do not perform well.

Overselling plan are those in which host sell outrageous space in the hope that user will not use this much space, and resell again that space. Generally overselling server start selling space with minimum 100MB or 200MB space, and provide many gb bandwidth, to lure new customer. In reality many website hardly need 20 to 30MB web space and less than 500MB bandwidth.

I am also planning to start some more services along with hosting and domain selling through my new venture.
