I have written my experience with free hosting in this article. I choose my first paid host at 2003, for my website dehradunyellowpages.com. Initially I bought 10MB linux space for Rs. 700/-. The reseller from whom I bought the space was from my city. Since at that time I had no experience on online purchase and I was not aware of any hosting provider in my city so that was my only option. Initially the service of that person was good, but later when I found some problem in sending mail from my website through php script, he was not able to solve the problem and told us that problem is on our end at our script whereas the script was functioning fine before that.

Also when my site start getting some traffic, I came know that there is another thing called bandwidth which my site is consuming. When traffic of my site increased my total bandwidth which was 100MB was consumed and site become inaccessible, I contacted my host he told you have to buy extra bandwidth. He gave me another 100MB bandwidth for Rs. 250/- .Since I was not prepared for this expenses, I found it pinching and decided that I should search for some new host, after searching few days on net, I found some some web hosting companies whose rates were compartively better than my current host. So I purchased space from new host and shift my website to my new host. I paid him Rs. 650 for 25MB space and 400MB bandwidth which was quite cheaper than my first host.

Today when I login to internet, and try to access my site. I found it was not accessible. I then checked my another site it was also unaccessible. After that I try to download email but was unable to connect. To find the problem I visit my server control panel. It was also unaccessible. Whereas all other sites were opening and working properly. My one site which is still in shared hosting was also easily accessible.

I thought it is DNS problem of my ISP, I tried after 10 minutes still my server was not accessible. I tried to access my sites through proxy, site was still unaccessible, now it had been confirmed that my server was down.

I shoot an email to my hosting provider to know the reason of this outage. Several reasons pop up in mind, like my credit card is rejected, or some one has complainted to my host for spam. As I run membership sites with thousands of members, so people instead of unsubsribing find it easy to do spam complaints to unsubscribe.

I started making plan to shift host, and started thinking how much old backup of my database I have. For one site I have cron task to take backup, therefore fresh database of that site was available whereas for other sites my database was around 15 days old. So I thought If could not access my database it will be a big loss for me.

I swithed off my pc and went out to do some work. After about half an hour I again checked my sites, now they were accessible I took a sigh of releif. I logon to my control panel and checked server uptime it was 5 minutes, it means server was down and it is restarted 5 minute ago.

Later I get the response from my host of my email. It was a power outage which caused this downtime.

Like most of the new webmasters my first web host was free web host. In year 2000 there was an article in a computer magazine probably PC Quest about how can you create a website without spending a single penny.

That article fascinate me. At that time I was new to internet, but not new to computer. That article contains list of some free webhosts and free redirection services. I visited the some sites mentioned in article and signed up in geocities and tripod for free webspace. After that with the help of redirection services I shorten my long URL which was provided by these web hosting services.

After using few days the control panel provided by them I got the experience of using tools provided by these sites. Then I decided to create my first website. I signed up space at another free webhost 50megs.com and booked a subdomain travelhill.i8.com, I choose their service because at that time they were providing 50MB space and FTP facilities, whereas geocities had discontinued the FTP facilities for free accounts also tripod did not have FTP facilities for free account. After booking the subdomain I developed my site with the help of frontpage and upload it on my server. I booked another space at 1accesshost.com and copied my site travelhill.i8.com to travelhill.1accesshost.com. My both sites are still active but now I do not use them and rarely visit those sites.
