Indian Search Engines
December 25th, 2006 at 02:48 pm by ashok in WebWith search engine emerging as most successful business in internet and all top tier and second tier search engines are doing million (or billion) dollar business per year. Many search engines are poped up in India in last one or two year. In last 2-3 months I came to know about 4 new Indian search engines.
Out of above, Guruji looks most promising to me. Although its interface is same as that of google. But results are fast. Guruji.com’s USP is india’s related content, they claim that their proprietary algorithm automatically identifies India related content on the web. Presently they display organic results only, but I think they have a plan to introduce their PPC program sooner or later. Recently one of the representative commented on technospot blog that We DO NOT (today or ever) rank the results based on money paid by the websites. Our sole criterion in presenting the results is RELEVANCE and relevance alone. Although other search engines also display result on relevance but they simulataneously show sponsored result also.
ByIndia.com is another promising search engine, recently Web2 Corp acquired it. Byindia.com appear to moe more like a social network site then search engine as it provides many other services for connecting users like blog, classifieds, video, auctions etc.
Raftaar.com is hindi search engine I tried it once, it was really fun to type in hindi, its functioning look great but, I did not find it much useful because there are not many sites in hindi. Hope with the increase of internet penetration in india raftaar.com utilities will also increase.
search.t6labs.com search engine is still in development stage. The developer of this search engine claims that they have developed an Internet search technology that can recognise the personality of a user and automatically align the results according to his or her interest.
Let’s see how these search engine perform, in coming year. Will they be able to reduce the addiction of google from Indian internet users.

Microsot is now ICANN Accredited Registrar
November 7th, 2006 at 07:31 pm by ashok in WebLooking to buy a new domain, now you can buy a domain directly from Microsoft. According to this article posted at netcraft. Microsoft has become an ICANN-accredited domain registrar. Microsoft is currently reseller of Australia based firm Melbourne IT.
It will be interesting to see, that whether Microsoft will become a retail seller of domains or not, because Google, which has become ICANN accredited reseller is using its status to improve search results by removing spammy domain names from search results.

Amazon launches new PPC program
November 5th, 2006 at 08:48 pm by ashok in WebAmazon has started its own PPC program. which will display ads on their pages.
I think Amazon affiliate will not like that visitors send by them to Amazon are shown third party ads. I myself do not promote any merchant, who are more intersted in showing ads then generating sales from the traffic.
Amazon has named this Clickriver Ads. Which allow shoppers to place sponsored link on Amazon.com
Also it will be intersting to see as said by Darren Rowse in problogger that if this program is extended and made available down the track to other publishers to run the ads on their sites.
I don’t think in near future it will be available to other publisher at least not before one year.

The Future of the Internet is in Asia
November 3rd, 2006 at 09:34 am by ashok in WebThe Future of the Internet is in Asia, on Cell Phones. According to Nitin Desai, U.N.’s top Internet official. The Internet Government Forum which is holding its first conference in Athens (Greece) is discussing the future of Internet.
The IGF has been set up by the United Nations to give governments, companies, organizations and individuals the opportunity to meet, discuss and debate the future of the Internet. India will host the IGF meeting in 2008.
In an interview Friday, Nitin Desai, predicted that Asia will drive a massive online expansion by the end of the decade, propelled by improved cell phone technology and expanding computer sharing plans within communities. “The big expansion in the Internet in the next five years is going to take place in developing countries,” Desai said. “A lot of it in countries which are not English speaking … where people don’t even know the Latin alphabet, for instance, China.”
Desai said Web-enabled cell phones would have a massive impact in the developing world. “Once you get that, the cost of access won’t be more than the cost of using a mobile phone. … India is talking in terms of half a billion people having mobile phones, in a matter of barely five years.”
