Why you should choose linux web hosting
August 24th, 2007 at 03:30 pm by ashok in Web HostingOne of the basic question which many newbie webmaster face is which hosting to choose linux hosting or windows hosting. Some people have misconception that since they work in windows computer, they should go for windows hosting. Since all web hosting packages comes with user friendly control panel, one can manage all aspects of hosting through this control panel. Therefore it hardly matters which operating system you use in your computer and which you choose for your web site hosting.
I myself own around 20 websites and my all websites are on linux server.
Some of the advantages which I found of Linux hosting are:
- Linux hosting is Cheaper than windows. Since linux is open source, it comes free and there is no license fee associated with it. Thats why linux hosting are generally cheaper than windows.
- Linux server has some of the popular features which windows server does not support like mod rewriting, cron job, etc.
- All popular blog and forum scripts runs on linux server if at any point of time you want to add forum or blog in your site you should use linux hosting.
- There are far greater number of open source and free scripts available which run on linux environment.
If you have any point in favour of linux or windows hosting do share.

Earn money online
August 21st, 2007 at 05:22 pm by ashok in Internet MarketingEarn Money Online. Looks a spammy title. I used to find many posts in different forums with titles similar to these. Generally the post are one liner with a referral link refering to some earn money quick type of site. And the person who has posted that link are generally newbie in the internet marketing and most probably have not received any money from the program which he is promoting.
There are many earn money online type of opportunities available on internet, some are genuine and many are fraud. Generally the modus operandi of these type of sites are to sell the product which tells how to earn money online means earn money by telling other how to earn money online.
Although for webmasters there are many genuine money making opportunities. Other than selling own product or service, they can earn money either by displaying pay per click ads on their website or by promoting third party products and getting commission on sales.
There are many programs in internet where you will earn money, but will never receive in your pocket. You can see them accumlating in your account at their website. I am writing 5 affiliate programs, through which I earned money and got the cheque and cashed it.
- Adsense : Pay per click program of google is the biggest money maker for all type of websites, small or big.
- Commission Junction : CJ is the leading performance based affiliate network. You can go through some of my earlier post on CJ, to know more about it.
- Shareasale: Another popular affiliate network, it is my favorite, because of simple interface and many good affiliate programs
- Text Link Ads : Sell the link on your website, whether your site is small or big.
- Adbrite : Pay per click, adsense alternative, but earning potential far less than adsense. Here you can find my experience with adbrite.
Do share your program, which you use to earn money online and received the money.
Due to wireless internet, a site does not have to worry about the weight of its page anymore. There is wireless internet help available 24 hours, which further contributes to its range. You can have any sort of website templates now. For most of them you don’t even need to have a web template guide. Like powerpoint templates, they are easy to work on. There was such time however, when people found modifying a cv template an arduous task. With more people working on web design development, all that has changed thankfully.

Configuring Outlook Express for your pop3 email
August 17th, 2007 at 10:48 am by ashok in GeneralWhen you are in web hosting or any other webmaster related biz, you get lots of questions which sometime we assumes that everyone knows. One of them is configuring outlook express to receive email. I spent lots of time telling my hosting customer via phone or yahoo messanger how to configure outlook express to send and receive email.
I decided to write a short tutorial for those, who need to configure outlook expresss to send and receive email.
Assuming email account is already created in cpanel or helm.
Step 1 : Start outlook express, click on tools->accounts->mail->Add->mail. The wizard to configure account will start.

Step 2 : In first window of wizard, type your display name after that your email address. Next step which ask for E-mail server Name. Choose My incoming mail server is a POP3 server. In the field of Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server : type mail.yoursitename.com. Outgoing mail (SMTP) server is also mail.yoursitename.com [Please note that this setting is in most of the shared hosting environment, it is always recommended to consult your host, if above setting does not work].

Step 3: Login Details: In Internet Mail Logon windows in account name field enter your full email id you@yoursitename.com, this is the mistake which many first timer do they write username part and not full email id, since this is shared hosting full email id is required. In password field enter the password for that email id. Do not check on secure password authentication check box. Chances are remote your hosting provider uses secure password authentication. Finish the wizard. Your account is created, and you can receive email.

Step 4: However to send email, one more step is required. Again click on tools->accounts->mail. Choose the email account which you created click on properties->servers. Under Outgoing Mail Server tick checkbox My server required authentication. Under settings choose use same settings as my incoming mail server.
Now you will be able to send and receive email from your outlook express without any problem.
Please note that these setting are configuring pop3 account for shared hosting. If you configuring gmail or your ISP’s email account these settings may not work properly.
A computers software store can create havoc in a newbie’s mind. Laymen seldom know the difference between mcafee antivirus and a regular 1. They would rather download software from a free ware’s site. People looking for particular programs like crm software will find themselves in luck. About software tools, it is usually pros who need them.

4 things to look before buying online
August 14th, 2007 at 11:10 am by ashok in Internet MarketingIn internet marketing the ultimate thing is to generate sale. If you have traffic and you are not generating sales then you are wasting your traffic, unless you are earning through adsense or advertisements. Generally e-commerce sites which sell some product or services do not display ads. In a shop in our town we buy from a shop because we know their physical location, we saw them everyday we met them personally, but in internet this is not the case, here we do not know the owner, never met them personally.
Although I am online since last 8 years, I started purchasing things frequently online since last 2-3 years only. Here are I am writing 4 things which I saw before buying anything from a site.
1) Outlook of the site: Site should not give the impression that it is running by a 16 year old kid, and must have a professional look.
2) Branding: whether I have heard of seen the site earlier or not, generally if the site is old or I am aware of the site since last few months or years, then chances are I will buy from it. Reaching first time a site and buying from it, the chances are remote.
3) Review of Site: Another thing which I do before buying is find its review. TYpe these 3-4 phrases in google and you may find some really intersting information about the site. Sitenmae review, sitename fraud, sitename scam, sitename sucks .
4) Response time: I do check the sites response time before buying. Generally I write a letter with few simple queries to check whether some live person is there to answer the queries. This just give the idea is how active the site is. However this is not guarantee of post sales support, as pre sales support is alway more active than post sale.
Feel free to give your opinion, what steps you take before buying online from a site.

New year with new look
August 12th, 2007 at 09:47 pm by ashok in blogAfter completing one year in blogging, I decided to start my new year with new looks. I did some changes.
- Changed the theme: I get bored seeing the same theme since last one year, also some bug had come in theme. So I decied I should go for new theme. Selecting a theme is very difficult task if you have thousands of choice. I spent lots of time in choosing the theme, final decided to go with deserted-theme.
- Added myavatar: Was thinking since last many days to decorate comment area and there is nothing better then adding MyAvatar plugin. Will add some more plugin in my commentator area.
- Mybloglog widget: Also added MyBlogLog widget in my theme. Almost all blogs which I visit have this widget. And seeing own avatar when you visit a blog gives a feeling that blog owner is welcoming us. So I decided to add this.
Do give your views on this changes, also if you have any suggestions feel free to give.
